The SUGARLESSe™ Story - Why Did We Develop It?
Once upon a time in December 2011, I was helping out at Caffex’s demo stand in a Whole Foods Market. Caffex is our sister company. They make the first truly delicious high energy snacks in the form of gourmet marshmallows! Imagine double coffee, espresso, chocolate, mocha, and tea in a mallow to take wherever you go and keep you alert for hours when you need it most. No spilling. No scalding. All marshmallow goodness. That’s CaffeMallows™ from Caffex.
Sampling was proceeding apace and along with the compliments came the question: “Are these made with sugar?” from quite a few people. After a while June, Caffex’s marketing maven, turned to me and said: “Can you make marshmallows without sugar?”
Yes. There are marshmallows already, made with isomalt, specifically for diabetics. Isomalt is a type of sugar alcohol composed of two simple sugars: glucose and mannitol. It is manufactured in a two-stage process, in which sugar is first transformed into isomaltulose which is then hydrogenated. A great tasting sugar-free sweetener that is very similar to sugar, it has one very significant drawback. Like most sugar alcohols, it can cause gastric distress, including flatulence and diarrhea. That means it is not advisable to consume more than 1.5 oz a day for adults and 3/4 oz for children, which does limit its usefulness.
With isomalt out of the picture, our team labored overtime to develop a better solution: Sugarlesse™. June then designed a hip and catchy logo for Sugarlesse™: Silhouettes of a trim female and male.

How SUGARLESSe™ Contributes to Your Health
All carbohydrates are oxidized into carbon dioxide and water by our metabolic system. The pathways they take, the rate at which they break down, and how your body liberates their energy determine their effects on your health.
While we can’t reveal the compounds in SUGARLESSe™ until our patent is issued - except that each is considered GRAS, that is Generally Recognized As Safe by the FDA - we can certainly tell you why they are healthy for you:
SUGARLESSe’s main compound is digested in the small intestine, not the stomach. That means it has a long, slow delay to hit the bloodstream. That prohibits the sugar rush and big insulin dump — and subsequent crash. It is this rise and fall of insulin which instructs the body to store fat. Sugarlesse™ helps bypass that scenario.
The other advantage of this ingredient is the good that it does your body. It helps protect your cells from dehydration, like it does for the cells of desert plants. The desert lies bare and brown for years — and then when it rains, it suddenly blooms with color. How do these plants stay alive and dormant during those dry years? By means of this particular compound. Produced naturally by the plants, it protects the seeds so that when rain does come, it is immediately sucked inside and the plant comes to life.
Anti-Aging Benefits Too?
Research into using this compound to prevent and treat neurological diseases like Huntington’s disease, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s has been promising. SUGARLESSe’s second main compound is minimally absorbed in the small intestine. Approximately half of it is removed from the body undigested, like other soluble fiber ingredients.
SUGARLESSe’s third main compound goes through the metabolic pathway at a much slower rate than other carbohydrates. One third of it gets absorbed in the cytoplasm of the liver. The rest is transported to the intestinal tract. There it is broken down by the microflora.
As a metabolic intermediate of carbohydrate metabolism, this compound does not put added stress on your body either. It is also made naturally by the body in amounts of up to 15 grams per day, so it is completely harmless at the level it is present in SUGARLESSe™.
